I started training myself to participate in a 10km run on November. Please do note that the only training instructions I get come from several websites I read, but what I have in here are actual experiences and I don't recommend that you follow them, but just learn from the stupid things I do.
Pre-preparation.
On 2010, my boyfriend gave me professional training sessions. That's when I got serious working out. After my first set of sessions, I took another one and was then confident enough to train by myself. So I've been working out with free weights for a year now.
For cardio, I attend group exercises that are fun and upbeat. The closest to "running" form I have is a 10-minute HIIT on the eliptical machine post-lift. I also sometimes do fasted [moderate] cardio which is mostly brisk walk for 20minutes.
Training - First week.
I know two things about running:
(1) You have to hydrate yourself. So I wake up 30minutes before I plan to hit the streets and drink 300ml before leaving.
(2) You have to wear some form of skin protection. All runners I know are dark and those who care less about their skin are dark and wrinkly. So I put a liberal amount of skin moisturizer/lotion before bed, and slap some on in the morning before leaving the door.

See my affordable, effective, super lotion.
So on Tuesday, I had a small pear and 10g of whey protein shake (that's 1/3 scoop of ISO Sensation, or 1/2 scoop of ON Whey Protein Shake). I lasted better that day.
I have a 10minute walk to my jog site so that's enough time for the water, food, and lotion to settle in.
Wednesday was a rest day.
Thursday I did 5km in 40minutes.
Friday I did 6.5km in 50minutes.
Saturday is a no-run day. I lifted weights for strength training (squats for legs) and to make sure that my upper body wouldn't lose its form/tone/muscle (whatever you call it).
Sunday I did 1.5hours - that's jog-walk of 8++km. I wanted to make sure I would survive at least 1.5hours no matter the distance. For breakfast, I had a banana instead of a pear and that seems to have made a difference. I already have a nice light tan by this time, but with glowing skin :D
Today, Monday, is a full rest day.
I don't have a weekly schedule, I usually play it by ear. I have a sore back from my Saturday weight training and am still tired from the long jog yesterday. So now I rest.
Why am I doing this?
I see people run for hours and I tell myself, I can do that if I train for it. But I am also a firm believer that if you can do it, then prove it. So I signed up for the 10k run and on my first training day, I did 3k first thing in the morning and almost fainted.
So I want to prove to myself that I can do this. It shouldn't be that hard. I trained myself to curl a 5lb dumbbell, then 10lb, then 15lb. The keyword is train. So that's what I'm doing now.
